The sector of aloe vera in Canary Islands: international competitivity and future scenarios

On this blog, we want to underline the article The sector of aloe vera in Canary Islands: international competitivity and future scenarios, which authors are Francisca Rosa Álamo Vera, José Carlos Bethencourt Gutiérrez and Javier Osorio Acosta. It has been published in the Agroalimentaria review (volumen 22, number 42, corresponding to the months of January-June 2016), because of its detailed analysis of the economic potential of Canary aloe vera.

The exports of Canary aloe vera to European Union are still almost insignificant, despite the fact that the archipelago is the first European región in growing and producing this plant, with 10 millions of adult specimens, which would be enough to satisfy the total demand of Europe. For this reason, this research work has the aim to analyse the regional competitivity of Canary Islands in the sector of aloe vera.

In this study, the authors identify and interpret different variables which represent external influences over the industry. Later, taking the conclusions of this diagnosis as a reference, they project scenarios related to the possible evolution of basic socioeconomic indications in this sector, with the aim of studying the impact which some strategic decisions can cause at a sectorial level on the competitive development of his industry, aspiring to a wider demand.

In these scenarios, the role played by touristic sector takes part, analysing the beneficial synergies which could be generated between both economic activities. Thus, in the optimistic scenario, the profits of the companies involved in the sector of aloe vera would increase significantly with the innovation and improvement of products, marketing campaigns and commercial agreements with hotels and other touristic facilities.

Proexca promotes Canary aloe vera

The public company Proexca, dedicated to fostering the export of Canary products, includes on its website an article about the company Productos Naturales de Canarias (Natural Products of Canary Islands, LLC), created to commercialise cosmetic and prescription products based in the use of Canary aloe vera.

For the development of these products, the company relies on the work of Kosei laboratories, established in 1994 and run by chemists with more than 20 years of experience. These laboratories do research and develop their products according to GMP rules, which make up the European legislation about cosmetics. When the product leaves the laboratories, Productos Naturales de Canarias takes care of its marketing and commercialisation at the international level.

The products are commercialised under the Atlantia Brand. Its functionality is reinforced thanks to the use of cutting-edge active ingredients, which are also hypoallergenic and supported by the experience of Kosei laboratories in the medical field. Nowadays, this brand has a wide range of cosmetic products in different lines (facial, body, dietetic and hair). Among other points of sale, they are commercialised at pharmacies (COFARTE, COFARES and Alliance Healthcare), the OTC stores of El Corte Inglés, WFDG (Aldeasa), Llongueras, Mercadona and the OTC stores of Carrefour. Besides, they are prescribed at national benchmark clinics and hospitals (ICO, Vall d’Hebrón, Teknon, La Paz, 12 de Octubre, etc.).

The international impact of this company arises as a consequence of the demand of this kind of products in European countries, especially by tourists which visit the Canary archipelago (Germany, United Kingdom, Italy, France and the Iberian peninsula). The 12 millions of visitors which Canary Islands receive on a yearly basis are a good sample of the potential demand which these products have in the said countries.
